How to Spend a Leisurely Day in Tulum

Yoga, cenotes, ceviche, and hammock naps in the Mayan jungle

Tulum is one of Mexico’s trendiest beach towns—tucked away along the Caribbean coast of the Yucatán and wrapped in the lush greenery of the Mayan jungle. It’s the kind of place where time slows down, where days are meant to be lived barefoot and blissfully unplanned.

Although my visit to Tulum was short, I made the most of a single, sun-soaked day. Here’s how I spent it—leisurely, just the way Tulum intended.

Morning: Yoga & Cenote Swimming

I was staying at Papaya Playa Project, an eco-chic hideaway that blends rustic beachfront cabins with luxury touches like ocean-view breakfasts and daily yoga classes. I started my morning with yoga on the beach—sun rising over the Caribbean, salty breeze, sand underfoot. A perfect way to ease into the day.

After yoga and a light breakfast (fresh fruit, local pastries, and coffee with a view), I set off to explore one of Tulum’s most iconic natural wonders: the Gran Cenote.

Despite its name, Gran Cenote is actually one of the smaller ones in the region, but it’s rich with beauty and worth the visit. I arrived early to beat the crowds. The entrance fee was 200 pesos (cash only), with an optional locker rental for 100 pesos. Snorkel gear and life jackets were also available for rent, but I was content with just my swimsuit and curiosity.

Climbing down into the cenote felt like entering another world—cool, crystal-clear water surrounded by jungle, limestone walls, and the echo of dripping water in underground caves. I swam alongside turtles and tiny fish, floating between pockets of sunlight and shadow.

Afternoon: Ocean Breezes & Beachside Bites

Back at Papaya Playa, I made a beeline for the beach. I claimed a shady teepee lounge and ordered a light lunch: fresh ceviche, guacamole, and a passion fruit cocktail. There’s something about eating seafood just steps from the ocean that makes everything taste fresher, brighter, better.

The rest of my afternoon was delightfully uneventful. I rotated between floating in the ocean, reading under the shade, and people-watching. Tulum has a way of making you feel disconnected from the world and completely present in the moment.

Evening: Hammock Naps & Jungle Stillness

By late afternoon, sun-kissed and fully relaxed, I returned to my cabin and surrendered to the allure of the hammock strung under a canopy of palm trees. With the gentle rustling of leaves and distant sound of waves, I dozed off—content and deeply at peace.

“There’s no wrong way to spend a day in Tulum. Whether you’re chasing cenotes or chasing stillness, this bohemian beach town invites you to unplug, slow down, and breathe it all in.”

If you’re planning a trip to Tulum, don’t overschedule yourself. The magic here isn’t in ticking off a checklist—it’s in lingering moments, unexpected detours, and long, lazy afternoons that stretch into evening. Tulum is a place to reset.

Whether you spend your time swimming through ancient caves, biking around town, or sipping cocktails under palm trees, Tulum leaves a mark. One slow day here, and you’ll understand why so many travelers return again and again.
