Forty-Five Under African Skies

A Birthday Safari Through Botswana’s Chobe National Park

For as long as I can remember, Africa sat at the very top of my travel bucket list. My love for safari began years ago through nature documentaries and wildlife series that made the African wilderness feel almost mythical to me. So when it finally came time to plan this milestone birthday trip, I chose Botswana and Zimbabwe — Botswana for the safari experience of a lifetime in Chobe National Park, home to the world’s largest elephant population, and Zimbabwe to witness Victoria Falls.

Turning 45 surrounded by lions, elephants, hippos, and the untamed beauty of Africa felt far more meaningful than any traditional birthday celebration ever could.

I stayed at the breathtaking Ngoma Safari Lodge overlooking the Chobe River, where every moment felt surreal. On the morning of my birthday, I headed out before sunrise for an early game drive. Watching the bush slowly come alive in the soft golden light was one of the most peaceful experiences I’ve ever had.

Later that afternoon, while relaxing in my suite overlooking the river, a troop of baboons suddenly began peeking through my windows as if we were playing some hilarious game of hide-and-seek. Celebrating my birthday with baboons in Botswana was definitely not on my bingo card, but it became one of my favorite memories from the trip.

That evening, during our sunset game drive, our guide suddenly heard a lion roaring in the distance. Within seconds, we were racing through the bush searching for him. Then finally, there he was. Seeing a lion freely roaming in the wild — not behind glass or on television — was one of those moments that barely feels real while it’s happening.

Back at the lodge that night, the staff surprised me with a birthday cake and a traditional song during dinner. As a solo traveler, it was such a thoughtful and emotional moment that I’ll never forget.

On my final day in Chobe, I cruised along the river watching elephants splash in the water while hippos surfaced nearby. We even spotted a rare male cheetah on the drive to the airport — the perfect ending to an unforgettable experience.

What surprised me most about Botswana was not just the wildlife, but how grounding the entire experience felt. After dreaming about Africa for so many years, finally being there was emotional in a way I didn’t expect.

Botswana completely captured my heart, and this trip didn’t end a dream — it expanded it. My safari dreams are so much bigger now.

And this was only chapter one.

Next stop: Zimbabwe, Victoria Falls, and more adventures before ending this unforgettable journey in South Africa.
