🇫🇷 A Royal Escape: Fontainebleau & Vaux-le-Vicomte

There’s something so dreamy about escaping the city, even just for a day. Recently, I traded Parisian cafés and cobblestone streets for châteaux, gardens, and countryside charm. And it was nothing short of magical.

Château de Fontainebleau

Majestic is the only word for it. This château is a jewel of French history, home to kings, emperors, and even Marie Antoinette’s famed Turkish boudoir. Inside, it’s a masterclass in opulence: gold accents, plush velvets, and chandeliers that sparkle like champagne bubbles. I wandered through its grand halls, awestruck by the architecture and detail. The iconic horseshoe staircase, the serene lake, and the formal gardens, every inch tells a story.

After the tour, I stopped in town for lunch, and it was French countryside bliss. I found the sweetest little bistro, ordered a glass of chilled Sancerre, and (yes, I went full cliché) had a Croque Monsieur. Perfection.

Post-lunch, I drove through the countryside and passed through Le Château de Blandy, a tiny village with a stone castle and a 14th-century church that made me feel like I’d stepped into a fairytale. Quiet, charming, timeless.

Vaux-le-Vicomte

If you love Versailles (and let’s be honest, who doesn’t?), this is the original blueprint. Built by Nicolas Fouquet to impress the king a little too much, his grand vision ultimately landed him in prison. Turns out, throwing parties better than the King of France is a bad idea. While Fouquet’s story is endlessly fascinating, I came for the gardens. Designed by the legendary André Le Nôtre. He is the genius behind Versailles, and these gardens are just as breathtaking. Elegant, symmetrical, sprawling… a true visual symphony. Walking through them feels like stepping into a living painting.

My guide encouraged me to take my time exploring the interiors, which are indeed exquisite, but I was there to fan-girl over the gardens. Honestly, I wanted to roll in the grass, hug the trees, and breathe in the scent of the flowers. Garden therapy is my idea of heaven.

This day was everything I needed. A reminder that just beyond the city, France is full of magic, history, and heart-stopping beauty. Sometimes, all it takes is a single day in the countryside to fall in love with France all over again.

Next Up: The South of France ☀️

I’m packing my linen dresses and sun hats because I’m heading south! First stop: iconic Saint-Tropez, followed by the legendary Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes.

More opulence, sunshine, and French indulgence are coming your way.
Stay tuned, mes amours 💋

Loved this! This was such a fun read—your descriptions make me feel like I am right there, soaking in the charm and opulence from my couch! I’m always struck by the
flat, symmetrical landscapes in Versailles. Almost like the King was trying to reflect his dominance over nature. And it all perfectly draws your eye to him/his residence while showing his control over everything. Fascinating!
