In November 2022, I packed a bag, booked a ticket, and flew halfway across the world to take myself on a solo adventure to New Zealand. I didn’t fully know what to expect, but what I found was one of the most rewarding trips I’ve ever taken. It was safe, soul-filling, and the kind of place where nature absolutely takes center stage. Think lush rainforests, ancient trees, geothermal wonders—and a stop in Middle-earth, of course.

🌿 Rainy Hikes and 800-Year-Old Trees
I based myself in Auckland and kicked off the trip with an eco-tour of the Waitakere Ranges, a lush rainforest just outside the city. Even with the rain coming down, it was a perfect day. We hiked through vibrant greenery to a tucked-away waterfall, had lunch on the dramatic black sands of Piha Beach, and ended the day face-to-face with an 800-year-old Kauri tree.
New Zealand takes its forests seriously. Before stepping onto any trail where Kauri trees are present, you’re asked to disinfect your shoes to prevent spreading disease. I loved this—it’s such a simple but powerful way to show respect for nature. These trees are massive, beautiful, and sacred, and standing beneath one was a truly grounding experience.

🌲 Rotorua: Redwoods and Racing Down the Hills
Next up was a full day in Rotorua, a city known for geothermal activity, Maori culture, and (unexpectedly) the most fun I’ve had on wheels in years.
I started the morning with a tree-walk high above the ground, wandering among 120-year-old redwoods via a series of suspension bridges. It’s quiet, serene, and just a little magical. Afterward, I hiked through the Whakarewarewa Forest, surrounded by towering trees and the fresh scent of pine.
But the real surprise of the day? The Skyline Luge. My driver insisted I try it, and though I wasn’t sure what I was getting into, I bought a pass for three rides. One ride in and I was hooked. I flew down winding tracks surrounded by forest, laughing like a kid the whole time. I ended up doing six runs total and could have easily gone back for more.

🧙♂️ An Afternoon in the Shire
I saved the best for last. On my final day, I made a pilgrimage to Hobbiton, and it was every bit as magical as I’d imagined. As a longtime Lord of the Rings fan, walking through the Shire felt like stepping into a storybook. The rolling green hills, the colorful round doors, the little details like laundry hanging on lines—it’s all exactly as it is in the films. We had drinks at The Green Dragon Inn, followed by “second breakfast”, a hobbit-worthy feast in the middle of the movie set. I didn’t want the day to end. It was the perfect sendoff to a trip that felt both grounding and wildly imaginative.

Reflections from the Road
New Zealand gave me so much—solo travel confidence, forest air, and a reminder that magic still exists in the world (especially if you’re willing to hike to it or ride a luge cart straight into it). I left feeling grateful, restored, and already plotting my retur
Until next time, New Zealand. I’ll be dreaming of rain-soaked trails, redwood canopies, and second breakfasts.
