Fiji: Overwater bungalows, Cloud 9, and the Garden of the Sleeping Giant

Like many other tropical island destinations, Fiji had been high on my travel list. In November of 2022, I was planning a trip to New Zealand and decided to add a stopover in Fiji. With just a few days on the island, I opted to stay at Marriott’s Momi Bay resort. And because life’s short, I booked myself an over-the-water bungalow. I spent the most glorious day sunbathing on Cloud 9, a floating paradise in the Roro reef. And I ended my time in Fiji with a peaceful day in the Garden of the Sleeping Giant.

Staying in an overwater bungalow was another travel bucket list item for me. The Marriott Momi Bay Resort did not disappoint. From the moment you arrive, you feel welcomed and at home. The hospitality at this resort was spectacular—truly a five-star experience. Knowing I’d arrive at the resort before 8 am, I pre-booked a massage at the spa as I waited for my bungalow to be ready. My morning was spent having a complimentary breakfast at the hotel’s main restaurant, followed by a 90-minute massage. And with my bungalow not available until after lunch, I sipped on cocktails at the adults-only infinity pool.

When my bungalow was ready, I hopped into a golf cart and headed for my room. I then spent the rest of the afternoon sunbathing on the deck and swimming in the bay. Over the next few days I read books, ordered room service, and was pleasantly surprised when I received a welcome amenity from the front desk- champagne!

With limited time in Fiji, I took one day trip. I’d received a recommendation from friends who honeymooned in Fiji to visit Cloud 9, as the experience was one of the highlights of their time in Fiji. I am glad I did; it is truly paradise on the ocean. The most stunning turquoise waters surround Cloud 9. The wood-fired pizzas are delicious, and the snorkeling is phenomenal. I ate pizza, sunbathed, swam in the ocean, and danced my ass off with all the other tourists on Cloud 9 that day. I met people from all over the world and had the best time jumping off the top level into the crystal blue waters below. I could have easily stayed on Cloud 9 forever.

The Garden of the Sleeping Giant was the perfect place to end my time in Fiji. As a plant lover, the garden is magical. You pay a small fee and are given instructions on the path you should follow to see the garden properly. Walking along the canopy-covered boardwalk, you see an abundance of orchids and lily ponds. The garden gets its name as it is located at the base of the Sleeping Giant Mountain. It is also home to over two thousand different kinds of orchids. If you are a plant lover this garden should not be missed.

If you are looking for pristine waters, friendly people, and a relaxing environment, head to Fiji. If you are concerned about it being a honeymoon destination, trust me, as a solo traveler, it was divine! Fiji is paradise, and I am happy I could explore this beautiful island to experience the Fijian culture and its hospitality. Vinaka Fiji for the good times!
